Maggie Alphonsi MBE – shot putter:
Recently I have been commissioned to shoot a series of portraits of top female athletes for the Women’s Sports Trust, of which Maggie Alphonsi is a patron. The aim of the shoots is to show strong and positive images or sports women, and there could be no better person to start with than Maggie.

Maggie plays rugby for England and has amassed 63 caps in a 16-year career but recently she has turned her hand to the shot put. See an article here in The Guardian about her change of career.

We met up with her at Lee Valley Stadium in March and the immediate warmth and positive energy she exudes almost guaranteed we were going to get a good shoot.

I decided to use studio light in these shots to make them dramatic. So much of my work these days is done with natural light but for this shoot I wanted to really make Maggie stand out and look heroic. This style of shot is often done with male athletes but not with women.

It was a great day and hopefully my images do justice to the hard work that Maggie is putting into being a shot putter. A massive thanks as always on these shoots to Danielle Selwood of the WST.
